LiveU Unveils Industry-First ‘Smart Grip’ for its Smartphone-based Live Video Mobile App

- Latest cutting-edge innovation from cellular uplinking pioneer boosts smartphones with additional cellular channel (MiFi) and battery for extra resiliency and performance

HACKENSACK, New Jersey, March 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ – LiveU (www.liveu.tv), the leader in portable live video-over-cellular solutions, is unveiling its new patent-pending Smart Grip device in a handheld monopod for its LU-Smart mobile app at NAB 2013 (booth #SU5511).  The new Smart Grip device holds a chargeable battery and MiFi channel (or any other mobile hotspot) that is bonded together with the smartphone’s internal 3G/4G connection to create two combined cellular connections beyond the smartphone, boosting the phone’s live video transmission time, quality, reliability and performance, without any need for Wi-Fi connectivity.

Supporting all iPhone and Android devices, the LU-Smart software-based app represents the next level in mobile app newsgathering. Without requiring any set-up time, LU-Smart can be used for rapid news coverage. Reporters can simply take out their personal smartphone and transmit high quality live video back to the studio, whenever and wherever they may be. Live reporting capabilities can be extended to any person in the news organization.

Samuel Wasserman, LiveU’s CEO, said, “LiveU is again pushing the boundaries of innovation in the cellular uplink space, this time with a new smartphone jacket.  LU-Smart enables any person with a smartphone to be a bona fide video journalist by simply downloading the software. We’ve had tremendous positive feedback for our smartphone app from broadcasters, complementing other LiveU units in the workflow and extending their newsgathering capabilities. It’s an ideal solution for breaking news coverage, especially in locations far from urban centers, and the new Smart Grip boosts its capabilities even further.”

The LU-Smart app includes other new features, such as: virtual matrix for simple workflow management, enabling newsroom operators to monitor and switch between content from different devices for live broadcasts; and ad hoc usage, which can be code-activated for 24 hours by the newsroom when a reporter or dedicated freelancer arrives at the scene.

LU-Smart is incorporated into the LiveU ecosystem by LiveU’s unified management platform, LiveU Total™, enabling control rooms easily and effectively to manage multiple video feeds from LiveU units operating in diverse locations.

LiveU owns the patent for cellular bonding for remote news gathering in the US and other countries. All LiveU products are based on this fourth-generation patented technology.

LiveU is presenting its Smart Grip device and full range of live video uplink solutions at the 2013 NAB Show®, April 8-11, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, booth #SU5511.

The LiveU Xtender, mounted on KOVR-TV (CBC Sacramento) weather truck, can be seen in the NAB Outdoor/Mobile area at the E-N-G Mobile Systems booth #OE820.

Ken Zamkow, LiveU’s Director of Sales and Marketing, will be speaking at the Broadcast Engineering Conference, at 10:00 am on Thursday, April 11, 2013 on “From Super Bowl to Varsity: Live Sports Coverage Using Cellular Bonding Technology” – IP for Television session.

Data caps and connectivity challenges hinder mobile worker productivity

PRLog (Press Release)Mar. 26, 2013REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., March 26, 2013: iPass Inc. (http://www.ipass.com/) (NASDAQ: IPAS), a leading provider of mobility services for enterprises (http://www.ipass.com/solutions/open-mobile/) and telecom service providers (http://www.ipass.com/open-mobile-exchange/), today published its quarterly Mobile Workforce Report (http://www.ipass.com/resource-center/surveys-reports/), which shows that while companies continue to embrace BYOD (Bring Your Own Device), connectivity issues are impacting productivity. Mobile workers have access to technologies that allow them to work from anywhere; however, more than half of all respondents stated they have problems connecting to Wi-Fi networks in key locations such as airports, airplanes and hotels. Mobile workers often experience limited and frustrating connectivity choices: an expensive one-time Wi-Fi “day pass” or costly mobile data services.

Forty-two percent of mobile workers agree that excessive charges and restrictions in monthly plans force them to limit their data usage, negatively impacting productivity. The report shows that a quarter of mobile worker respondents expense back their mobility costs and fifty-four percent would pay for a Wi-Fi roaming plan. However, even with all these challenges, Wi-Fi remains the connectivity option of choice for nearly two thirds of all mobile worker respondents.

“We are seeing that mobile workers are becoming more cautious about exceeding data caps and deliberately limiting their data usage, which is hindering productivity,” said
Evan Kaplan, chief executive officer, iPass. “Clearly, enterprises that provision mobile workers with devices, or leverage a BYOD strategy, need to ensure that workers can connect when and where they want, and work on-the-go as cost-effectively and productively as possible.”

The corporate BYOD trend that allows employees to leverage their own personal devices for work continues to grow. Sixty-two percent of mobile workers stated they already use their personal smartphones. Seventy-two percent believe their personal devices should be enabled for work purposes. Consistent with this trend, the report suggests there is a growing diversity in the types of devices that mobile workers use.

The report also shows a distinct trend in the mobile device of choice. While in 2012 laptops were the preferred device for mobile workers, the top choice is now an iPhone. Only 12 percent of mobile workers named laptops and notebooks as their preferred mobile device. Even MacBooks, which are typically viewed as a desirable high-quality device, experienced a decline. This change could be attributed to the fact that more corporations are embracing BYOD. As more organizations continue to implement BYOD, workers are carrying fewer devices, likely because fewer people have an IT-provisioned device in addition to a personal device. The report states that mobile workers are carrying 2.95 devices on average, compared with 3.5 in 2012.

Upon further analysis of device choices, our report shows that the Samsung Galaxy and Windows 8 tablets are starting to gain momentum in the tablet market. Twenty-eight percent of mobile workers stated they plan to own a Samsung Galaxy tablet within the next six months. Seventeen percent of workers say they will have a Windows 8 tablet within the same time period.

Leading Spanish Media including El Pais Turns to LIVE Audiovisual for LiveU’s Video-over-Cellular Solutions

- LiveU technology used by leading Spanish newspapers including El Pais for online video

HACKENSACK, New Jersey, March 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — LiveU (www.liveu.tv), the leader in portable live video-over-cellular solutions, has announced that Spanish audio visual services company LIVE Audiovisual, has been selected by key Spanish national media – including El Pais – to supply video services based on LiveU’s live video uplink technology. Video is now an essential and popular part of national media’s online coverage with stories receiving a huge hit rate.

LIVE Audiovisual, which was formed in 2012 by three highly experienced broadcast professionals, has been supplying El Pais with video coverage using LiveU’s LU60 mobile backpack over 3G and Wi-Fi. Diego de la Serna, CEO and co-founder, said, “We have used the technology for all kinds of events – at mass demonstrations, concerts, funerals, meetings and at sports events. It’s vital for our business. Practically every day the service that we offer our clients depends on LiveU technology for its success.”

As well as El Pais, LIVE Audiovisual also uses LiveU technology for work with Group VOCENTO(ABC newspaper) and the ZETA Group (El Periodico). It has also provided coverage of events at the Racecourse de la Zarzuela in Madrid as well as for the non-profit corporate organisation ONCE.

LIVE Audiovisual uses both store forward and live transmission capabilities, highlighting the former as being a key reason for selecting LiveU. As well as providing significant economic advantages in the field, it has also allowed the company to change the way that it shoots, no longer recording with a view to producing finished video items, but in order to transmit either live or with a short delay.

De la Serna added, “The survival of newspapers depends on the Internet. What they need to offer is a powerful multimedia platform as a gateway to all sorts of unique, interactive content for the public and this has to be accessible on all types of digital hardware.”

The solution and support has been supplied to LIVE Audiovisual by Park7, LiveU’s Spanish distributor.

David Yakov, LiveU’s VP Sales, said, “LiveU is recognised as the de-facto standard for live mobile video transmission for TV networks. In the newspaper world, where the Internet is now core to every business model, LiveU is an enabler for delivering live video content to web sites, greatly enriching their customers’ online viewing experience. Companies such as Live! Audiovisual are leading the innovation in this market.”

LiveU’s flagship LU70/LU60 product is the industry’s leading, bonded 3G/4G LTE backpack with proprietary RF technology for superior resiliency, up to 1080 HD video and sub-second latency for a satellite-like experience.
