Brandon Medical’s Coolview HD-LED “are a great improvement” for Newcastle University

PRLog (Press Release)Mar. 15, 2013LEEDS, West Yorkshire, U.K.The Newcastle University School of Dental Sciences is renowned for providing the best clinical training facilities for undergraduate and postgraduate students and has chosen Brandon Medical to provide new HD-LED examination lighting to the Clinical Simulation Unit (CSU).

This presented an unusual challenge for Brandon Medical as it was questioned whether it would be possible to replace or upgrade the existing Halogen lighting system. It was also important to the CSU to have low level and not ceiling mounted lighting to enable the viewing of the wall mounted training screens.

Brandon Medical’s Coolview HD-LED examination light was chosen and mounted directly onto the work bench. The long reach of Brandon Medical’s ‘LX’ spring balanced arm system allowed the positioning of the lamp head to best suit the procedure. The replacement of the lights has provided a significant improvement in the amount of lighting available in the working area, an increase of 64%. This lighting can be altered from 5% – 100% intensity and also provides excellent colour corrected light which provides accurate representation of the full colour spectrum.

There was also an unforeseeable benefit of upgrading the examination lights to an intensity adjustable LED light source. When the students are working with composite filling material, it’s important that the material remains pliable during the restoration as this enables adjustments to be made before curing with a specially designed UV light source. The intensity of older halogen lights could not be adjusted, heating the material which causes the composite to set prematurely. The new LED light source intensity and colour temperature can now be adjusted giving the students more working time, where the composite remains malleable.

Diane Anderson – Nurse Coordinator at the School of Dental Sciences commented:

“Newcastle School of Dental Sciences are continually updating and improving our teaching and training facilities. The new LED lights have made a massive difference to the Clinical Simulation Unit.

The students and staff are very satisfied with the lights and they are a great improvement for the CSU. The manoeuvrability of the lights and positioning of the lamp head allows greater visibility when working on the phantom heads so students can actually see what they’re doing. Brandon Medical gave excellent guidance and advice when helping us to choose the lights and this was followed through to after sales and installation.”

Innovative LED Technology Aids Design Of The Most Energy Efficient Light Bulbs On Market

Sedna LED GU10 LED lamp.PRLog (Press Release)Feb. 12, 2013 – Cardiff, UK – Sedna LED Ltd have teamed up with reputable international lighting manufacturer, Digilamp Europe, to optimize the use of innovative LED technology. In doing so, they have gained exclusivity and can now provide one of the most energy efficient light bulbs on the market – the LED GU10.

How does this technology work?

Nathan Edwards, Managing Director at Sedna LED Ltd said: “Unlike ordinary incandescent bulbs, our LED GU10 doesn’t get very hot and it doesn’t have a filament that will burn out. This guarantees an extremely long lifespan, with many bulbs such as this LED GU10 lasting up to 30,000 hours.”

With LEDs, a much higher percentage of the electrical power is going directly to generating light, not heat, which cuts down on the electricity demands considerably.

Its retrofit design guarantees straight-forward replacement of former energy-wasting light bulbs. And with a rare lumen output of up to 320, this GU10 LED lamp ensures maximum brilliance – in both senses of the word.

Full spec: Up to 320 lm, ideal replacement for 50W incandescent bulb with similar ambiance; Only 5W – up to 90% energy savings and reduced carbon emissions: 30,000 hour rate life lasting 10-15 times longer than a standard bulb; Beam angle: 100° (others available on request); 2 Year warranty; Available in Warm White (3200K) or Natural White (4200K)

Super HDR for fast acquisition of high quality images

PRLog (Press Release)Jan. 21, 2013 – With the first update of the DSX industrial microscope systems (http://www.olympus-ims.com/de/microscope/opto-digital/), Olympus introduces a series of options to increase image quality and ergonomics of their devices. The new Super HDR software has been developed to enhance the standard high dynamic range (HDR) function on the DSX100, DSX500 and DSX500i which combines several images taken at different exposures in order to accurately correct brightness variations on sample surfaces. The unique Super HDR function improves signal-to-noise ratio and increases acquisition speed of images. It comes in two modes; fast mode uses a speed of up to 12 frames per second to provide smooth imaging even when focusing the sample or moving the stage, while fine mode provides sharper definition with a higher signal-to-noise ratio. With these enhancements Olympus sets a new benchmark for high-resolution image quality.

Exclusive to the DSX100, new anti-halation adaptors use polarised lighting to control reflection from the LED illumination ring. This eliminates artefacts derived from the light reflection at glossy surfaces and opens up new possibilities in colour reproduction, making the detailed detection of specific areas for analysis as clear as possible. Furthermore, the DSX100 is now compatible with the DSX-UFSSU motorised stage. This enables the operator to take advantage of the full range of ergonomic automation features, such as the Macro map function which increases convenience and ease-of-use by indicating the actual observation position on the specimen in a separate low magnification view.

Olympus has also made significant improvements to 3D image quality in both the DSX100 and DSX500. The DSX100 offers highly reliable 3D visualisation while the DSX500 now creates superb 3D data which are coming close to the OLS4000 laser measuring microscope system. These upgrades allow for clear and precise 3D imaging and analysis of complex surface topologies for accurate sample measurements.
All three DSX series systems are now additionally supported for Windows 7 64 bit. For further information on all the improved features, please visit the Olympus website, www.olympus-ims.com/opto-digital.
